PROJECTS

Youth for Pollinators Pilot Project

In 2022, the European Year of Youth, the European Parliament proposed a Pilot Project to step up engagement of youth in actions for pollinator conservation. With the budget of EUR 4.5 million, the proposal asks for:

  • Establishment of a Youth Assembly as a platform for sharing knowledge and experience, discussing and making policy recommendations;
  • Setup of Small Grants Scheme to support direct youth actions on the ground;
  • Training and education of young actors on the conservation of wild pollinators and biodiversity, embedding this in school curricula.

The implementation of the Pilot Project is currently prepared by the Commission, and will be supported by the JRC ‘s Competence Centre on Participatory and Deliberative Democracy. The launch of the project's activities is planned in Q2 2024.

EU PROGRAMMES

The European Solidarity Corps supports projects involving young people in various solidarity related fields, including on the topic of environment and nature protection.  Several ongoing youth-led solidarity projects address pollinators. Some projects focus on information and awareness raising activities such as the Wild Bee Pollinator Conservation project or the Solidarity Bees project . Another example – the project Ecosystem Support  - addresses creation of a favourable habitat for wild pollinators and other insects.

Erasmus+ has also funded projects aiming to raise awareness amongst pupils, providing them with an opportunity to learn about pollinators through engaging in concrete activities such as their monitoring in the field, thus learning about their habitat requirements and the threats they face:
