European statistics on the structure and production potential of orchards have been collected since 1977 every 5 years. In the 1977 and 1982 surveys only four fruit species were covered (apples, pears, peaches and oranges). Since 1987 also apricot, lemon and small citrus fruit trees as well as cooking apples and pears have been part of the survey. In 2018 the orchards structure data collection was moved to Integrated Farm Statistics, as a module to be collected in 2023. A great deal of simplification was sought, by removing the collection of the density and age classes per variety and use (human consumption or processing).

Pome fruits

Pome fruits are members of the plant family Rosaceae, sub-family pomoideae. They are fruits that have a "core" of several small seeds, surrounded by a tough membrane. For the purpose of the data collection, only apples and pears are considered.

Stone fruits

A stone fruit, also called a drupe, is a fruit with a large "stone" inside (also called a "pit" or pyrena), surrounded by an outer fleshy part (mesocarp, or flesh) which is in turn covered by the exocarp, or skin. For the purposes of the data collection, only peaches, nectarines and apricots are considered. The nectarine is actually a type of peach, except that it has a smooth skin compared to a peach's velvety one. A single recessive gene keeps it from being a peach.

Oranges

An orange is a fruit of various citrus species in the family Rutaceae. It primarily refers to Citrus x sinensis, which is also called sweet orange, to distinguish it from the related Citrus x aurantium, referred to as bitter orange. The sweet orange is a hybrid between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata). The data collection refers to varieties of trees of the species Citrus x sinensis (blanca, navel, sanguine (blood orange) and others).

Lemons

The lemon (Citrus limon) is a species of small evergreen trees in the family Rutaceae. A genomic study of the lemon indicated it was a hybrid between bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) and the citron (Citrus medica). This class is including both the yellow lemons and the acid limes.
