ORBIT and Taxo-Fly are both three-year projects launched in 2021 by the Directorate General for Environment of the European Commission to develop resources for species inventory and taxonomy for European bees and European hoverflies respectively. Through ORBIT, the European Commission will make tools accessible to researchers to identify European bees These are built with a view to spport the work of both professional taxnominists and citizen scientists.

The facilitate large-scale scientific studies on trait-based biodiversity patterns and responses of wild bee communities to environmental changes across ecosystems, taxa, and spatial scales in Europe. The overall objective of Taxo-Fly is to create a new taxonomic knowledge base, which lays the ground for the identification of the Hoverflies of Europe. The tasks carried out in these two projects will support other European Commission funded projects, such as the EU Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (EUPoMS), the Preparatory Action for EU Pollinator Monitoring Scheme and Indicators (SPRING project), the Horizon 2020 Europe research projects (PoshBee, Safeguard), and European National action plans for pollinators.
